The wild animal that is being killed is hidden from public sight and discourse, including by the environmental terminology.

The elephant is the metaphor and its interpretation.

Using the term in a sentence:

  • The killing of wild animals is so vast (see Wild Animal Genocide) that it is like an elephant, highlighting its surprising invisibility. It is indeed the elephant in the room when it comes to “environmental” public discourse.
  • I was speaking at a nature and the environment conference about the elephant in the room and how we should start talking about the lives and individual stories of wild animals hurt by human activity.
