Faunacide

« Back to Glossary Index

A more academic-sounding term than Wild Animal Genocide and a bit broader since it can include animals (fauna are animals in a particular region, habitat, or period). Cide comes from the Latin word “caedere,” which means “to kill” or “to cut down,” so Faunacide is the mass systematic killing of animals in a particular region, habitat, or period.

Using the term in a sentence:

  • When I speak at academic conferences, I don’t use Faunacide but wild animal genocide to highlight the ethical issue and the atrocity.
