Pound of Death
Israel’s Largest Dog-catcher Exposed
In a collaboration with Let the Animals Live, we carried out an investigation that, for the first time, exposes how a private quarantine dog pound operates. An undercover investigator worked for the largest dog catcher in Israel, who serves as the exclusive dog catcher for the IDF (Israeli army) and for additional regional councils.
The investigation reveals puppies dying without medical treatment, mass mortality, a rampant epidemic that was concealed from the authorities (the IDF, local councils, and the Ministry of Agriculture), and cruel dragging of dogs leading to choking. All of this involved blatant violations of regulations and laws.
Despite attempts at concealment, the authorities became aware of the epidemic (as evidenced by official reports), yet continue to order the capture of dogs and their transfer into the pound, effectively sending them to an almost certain death. The investigation also exposes financial fraud against the IDF and local councils, as well as severe negligence by numerous veterinarians who visited and were responsible for the facility.
The public campaign led by “Let the Animals Live” generated significant public pressure. Together with substantial legal efforts, this ultimately led the Ministry of Agriculture to shut down the place.
