Introduction
Animal rights investigations often take place in challenging and high risk environments where reliable, discreet, and energy efficient tools are essential. Despite the growing need for documentation, most commercially available cameras fall short. They often lack features such as long battery life, discreet design, or scheduled recording. Investigators have had to compromise between usability and effectiveness. In response to this gap, the Zetta AR1 was developed. This is a hidden camera created specifically by and for animal rights investigators. Built through extensive feedback and real world testing, the AR1 is designed to meet the practical demands of long term covert investigations, helping activists document cruelty more safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Understanding the Need
As part of our work at Sentient, we consistently focus on identifying the real needs of animal rights investigators. One recurring challenge has been the lack of a high-quality, reliable, and energy-efficient hidden camera. Investigators have repeatedly emphasized the importance of such a tool, with some even calling it a potential “game-changer.” Although many cameras exist on the market, most fall short, either due to poor reliability, high power consumption, or missing key features like scheduled recording, lens extension cables, and built-in IR LEDs. This forces investigators to depend on makeshift setups using external components. Despite several past attempts to develop a suitable device, none have fully met the specific demands of field investigations, and previous efforts have consistently fallen short.
Project “Basic”: Turning Needs Into Features
In late 2023, we began Project “Basic” — an effort to create a hidden camera tailored to the core needs of installation-based investigations. We consulted investigators from across the globe, with varying levels of experience, to identify the essential features such a device should offer. The range of needs was wide, making the process challenging. To design a camera that could serve as many users as possible while staying compact and cost-effective, we had to carefully narrow the list down to the most critical features. By March 2024, the final feature set was established.
The Zetta AR1 was planned as a discreet and efficient tool built specifically for field investigations. Designed for fixed installations, it includes built-in WiFi for seamless remote control, selectable video resolutions with adjustable frame rates, and optional night vision and audio recording. We incorporated lens flexibility, offering both narrow and wide views, along with a lens extension cable for more adaptable placement. One of the most important features was scheduled recording: users can define specific daily time windows for recording, with the camera entering standby mode outside those hours to optimize power use. Additional specifications were also included, though we keep some confidential. Each unit was capped at a price of $150 to ensure accessibility for grassroots groups and independent investigators working with limited resources.
Collaborating with Zetta Systems
Developing a new camera from the ground up proved to be both financially and logistically challenging. Drawing on our R&D experience, we recognized that rather than starting from scratch, modifying an existing product could offer a more practical and effective path forward. After reaching out to numerous manufacturers – including leading hidden camera companies and suppliers – we established a partnership with Zetta Systems in July 2024.
Zetta agreed to adapt one of their existing models to fit our specific needs. We mapped out several development phases, starting with internal testing, followed by real-world field evaluations by investigators from around the world. Their feedback was instrumental in guiding key improvements, leading to the release of the final version in January 2025.
Impact in the Field and Real-World Success Stories
The response to the AR1 has been overwhelmingly positive. By March 2025, over 127 units had been ordered by different organizations and individuals. One of the most notable uses of the AR1 came from L214, a prominent French animal rights organization. They employed the camera in an investigation of the Charlieu slaughterhouse in the Loire region, France. Thanks to the AR1’s set of features, they were able to capture immersive, emotionally resonant footage:
“Our guy used AR1 cameras to obtain images of the Charlieu slaughterhouse in France. Thanks to the compactness of the cameras, he was able to obtain immersive images that were as close as possible to the emotions of the animals on death row. The cameras were also programmed to start recording when the slaughterhouse was in operation, saving time and space on the SD card… These cameras are top performers, with low power consumption, highly efficient video compression and game-changing programming.”
As a result of this investigation, Carrefour suspended supply to the facility, legal proceedings were initiated, and L214 filed suit against the state for inspection failures (for more information and footage please refer to: https://www.l214.com/enquetes/2025/abattoir-de-charlieu/).
Another success story came from a group that wishes to remain anonymous for strategic reasons. Made up of highly skilled and experienced investigators, their recent operation led to significant outcomes. This was their first time using the AR1, and they were very pleased with its performance. They shared that they now plan to use it more often in future investigations.
What’s next?
In the coming months, we will keep gathering feedback from users to finalize the last adjustments. As more investigations are now using the AR1, we plan to continue supporting current users and look forward to seeing more success stories shared soon. In the long run, we aim to develop new versions of the camera to address a broader range of investigative needs.
