Introduction
Animal rights investigations require tools that are reliable, discreet, and power-efficient. However, investigators have long struggled to find a device that truly meets their needs. In response to this gap, the Zetta AR1 was created: a hidden camera designed by and for animal rights investigators.
When we launched the Zetta AR1 in January 2025, our aim was straightforward: provide animal rights investigators with a hidden camera that does not force them to compromise between reliability, discretion, and power efficiency. One year later, the AR1 has moved beyond being “a promising tool” and has become a practical solution for many animal rights investigations, particularly in farms and slaughterhouses, where conditions are demanding and failure is costly.
This follow-up post shares what we have learned since release: how the camera has been adopted internationally, how it performed across real operations, what investigators consistently valued most, and where the AR1 still falls short. The goal is not to sell a success story, but to document what actually worked, what needs improvement, and where we go from here.
A Year of Real-World Use: Adoption and Reach
The most meaningful test of any investigative tool is not a lab environment, but field deployment. Since January 2025, 164 units of the AR1 have been sold, reaching 11 organizations and individuals across 7 countries. This reflects something important: the need that sparked Project “Basic” was real, and it was not local.
Over the past year, AR1 units were used in 18 investigations. Of these, 5 were published and reportedly led to major traction. This matters because traction often means more than attention. It can mean institutional responses, corporate reactions, legal processes, or rapid public mobilization. Unfortunately, we cannot share specific investigation details due to data protection considerations, but user feedback has been clear: the AR1 delivered real operational value.
One European organization described their release as “one of the biggest in the last years.” What matters is not the praise, but how rare it is for investigators to receive tools designed around their real constraints.

Where the AR1 Helps Most and Where It Falls Short
Over the past year, feedback has been consistent. The AR1’s biggest impact is improving operational efficiency. Its scheduling feature limits recording to active hours, reducing unusable footage and review time while enabling longer deployments with fewer battery changes. This saves both resources and risk.
Several users also highlighted the AR1’s compact size as a practical advantage. It is easier to hide, quicker to install, and less likely to attract attention in sensitive environments.
The most consistent drawback is night performance. Compared with preferred alternatives, especially the MateCam X7/9, the AR1 struggles more in low-light conditions. For investigations that depend on strong nighttime footage or take place mainly in dim indoor settings, an alternative optimized for night capture may be the better choice. The goal is not loyalty to one device, but choosing the best tool for each site and set of conditions.
Some users also reported reliability issues. However, overall performance has been considered acceptable given harsh field use, and often better than alternatives. When problems occurred, support from Sentient and Zetta was consistently quick and focused on keeping operations running.
What We Tried Next (and Why It’s Not a Simple Road)
We explored further development to better address user needs. However, technological and financial considerations limited what could realistically be improved within the same framework, especially without compromising the core constraints that made the AR1 viable in the first place: price, size, simplicity, and field-oriented features.
That said, we are not closing the door. We plan to continue examining this lane while tracking and learning from other organizations’ developments in the space. The AR1 was never meant to be the end of the story. It was meant to be proof that investigator-driven design is possible, and that it can deliver real-world value.

Conclusion
One year after launch, the Zetta AR1 has demonstrated something that is easy to forget in investigative work: the right tool does not just improve footage quality, it changes what investigators can attempt safely. With more than 150 units sold, adoption across Europe and North America, and 18 investigations supported, some of them published with major traction, the AR1 has earned its place as a serious, field-tested device designed around real operational constraints.
It remains imperfect. Night performance is its most notable weakness, and further development faces real limitations. But the AR1’s core strengths, built-in scheduling, external power input, and practical concealment, have already made investigations more efficient and less risky for many teams. In a field where tools often lag years behind needs, that alone is a meaningful shift.
